Bringing Farming to Life

I’m a firm believer in education. I love getting into local primary schools and talking about how we actually produce food on a working farm — with loads of props, and sometimes even a tractor if I can!

I’m also part of the NFU Education Farmers for Schools programme, going into secondary schools to explain how we balance food production with looking after the environment. For me it’s all about starting a conversation and getting young people thinking about food — where it comes from, and what it takes to grow it.

One of the biggest highlights I’ve ever had was going down to Downing Street a few years ago with NFU Education to run a workshop with a school, right there in front of Mrs Murty. It was an experience I’ll never forget — and yes, I also got to meet Larry the cat 🥔🚜

Outside of the schools work, I’m a proud NFU member. I’m chairman of my local branch, I sit on the Potato Growers Forum, and I try to get involved wherever I can — from meeting with MPs to speaking on TV, radio and in the newspapers — to help make agriculture better for everyone who works in it, and to raise awareness of food production.

I’m also very proud to be a Cambridgeshire County Council tenant. Cambridgeshire County Farms is the biggest local authority–owned landlord in the UK, with 13,354 hectares and 160 tenants on the estate. It offers some of the best opportunities for new entrants to get started in farming — and I genuinely know that without it, I wouldn’t be farming today.
